Mixed News On Incinerator

Norfolk County Council has informed waste company WRG that its plan for building an incinerator at Costessey is no longer the Council's preferred waste disposal option. However, the Green Councillors have warned that the ruling Conservative Group at County Hall is still considering building an incinerator.

Green Party County Councillor Andrew Boswell said: "This decision is due to problems with the site in question and sadly not because the ruling group has decided that burning waste is a bad idea. A full-blown incinerator is still being considered. The second option currently on the table is a form of Mechanical Biological Treatment involving burning as part of the process. Pellets are produced that would be burnt either on site in Costessey or transported elsewhere. The County Council should rule out any option involving burning."

Janet Bearman, Green City Councillor for Town Close ward, added: "Green Councillors are pressing for improved recycling facilities and a Resource Recovery Park as environmentally-friendly ways of tackling the landfill problem. Resource Recovery Parks have proved effective in California and Sweden at separating residual waste to achieve very high levels of re-use and recycling. They also create many new local jobs."

Jenny Lind and Eagle Walk Parks Refurbishment

The City Council obtained money from Persimmon for the refurbishment of Jenny Lind and Eagle Walk Parks as part of the agreement for the development of the old N&N site. Some money has been released and more should soon be forthcoming. The Council's Green Spaces department is working with St. Stephen's Community Partnership on design plans for both parks. Details of another consultation day for local residents will be publicised by the Council when a date is set. Please contact the Green Councillors if you would them to inform you about this.

Third Unthank Tesco Application Rejected

Norwich City Council's Planning Committee has again unanimously rejected an application by Tesco to build an Express store on the corner of Unthank Road and Trinity Street. Concern about bringing more delivery lorries to the area was again one of the several reasons cited. The Green Councillors are calling on Tesco to tidy up the site and to sell the land so it can be put to a positive use, such as housing. The Public Inquiry into the second application has now been scheduled for 6th December. However, Tesco has the option of appealing against the rejection of the third application instead or as well.
