GREENS WIN TOWN CLOSE BY-ELECTION

Green candidate Chris Hull was elected as County Councillor for Town Close ward in the by-election held on 26 May. 1,151 Town Close electors voted for Chris, meaning a large swing of 15% from the LibDems to the Greens since June 2004. Chris secured 36% of the vote, nearly double the Green percentage in Town Close last year. The Green Party won its first seat on the County Council on 5 May, in neighbouring Nelson ward. The Green win in Town Close means that there will be two Greens at County Hall for the next four years, rather than just one.

Councillor Chris Hull commented: "I would like to thank Town Close residents for electing me as their County Councillor. I feel honoured to be representing Town Close and enjoyed meeting so many residents during the election campaign. We will keep our promise of visiting residents throughout the year and delivering regular newsletters to inform people of our work."

The Conservatives continue to control the County Council (although they did not win any County Council seats for the Norwich area). There were no City Council elections this year. The City Council remains in no overall control, with the five Green Councillors holding the balance of power.

    Two Greens at County Hall

Councillor Chris Hull believes it was a crucial achievement for the Greens to gain a second seat.

Chris commented: "Having two County Council seats means that we gain spaces on more committees and that we can propose motions to council (because there is someone to second them).

"Our objectives include: fresh organic food in school meals; ethical investment of pension funds; protection of school playing fields from development; and significant funding for public transport, cycle routes and pedestrian safety, as top spending priorities."

    (Lets) make poverty history

Several local Green Party members and Councillors will be joining the march in Edinburgh on 2 July in support of the Make Poverty History campaign. The march takes place as the leaders of the world's richest countries gather in Scotland for the G8 summit. The Green Party supports the demands of Make Poverty History: for complete cancellation of debt that developing countries 'owe' to Western countries; for more aid; to ensure aid goes to local people rather than Western contractors; to reform global trade rules and ensure a fair deal for developing world producers.

Green Councillor Andrew Boswell has set up a website to promote a CD made by school children to raise money for the cause:
