Mixed News On Incinerator
Norfolk County Council has informed waste company WRG that its plan for building an incinerator at Costessey is no longer the Council's preferred waste disposal option. However, the Green Councillors have warned that the ruling Conservative Group at County Hall is still considering building an incinerator.
Green Party County Councillor Andrew Boswell said: "This decision is due to problems with the site in question and sadly not because the ruling group has decided that burning waste is a bad idea. A full-blown incinerator is still being considered. The second option currently on the table is a form of Mechanical Biological Treatment involving burning as part of the process. Pellets are produced that would be burnt either on site in Costessey or transported elsewhere. The County Council should rule out any option involving burning."
Peter Offord, a Green Party campaigner in Thorpe Hamlet ward, added: "We must significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. The Green Councillors are pressing for improved recycling facilities and a Resource Recovery Park (RRP) as environmentally-friendly ways of achieving this. RRPs have proved effective in California and Sweden at separating residual waste to achieve very high levels of re-use and recycling. They also create many new local jobs."

Heathgate Community Centre
Peter Offord writes:
Several residents of the Heathgate area asked me to find out whether Heathgate Community Centre is to re-open. The City Council has agreed that the building should be refurbished and restored as a community centre but it is currently unclear when this will happen. Green Councillors are pressing for necessary work on community centres to be a priority for Council funds so this and other facilities can be put to good use. This work should be a higher priority than donating £3m to the Theatre Royal refurbishment as Labour and the LibDems wish to do.

Orbital Bus Changes
Councillor Janet Bearman writes:
The Orbital Bus was recently relaunched with some route and timetable changes. For example, the route now includes the Bus Station and Airport. Timetables are available from libraries, the Bus Station and Norfolk County Council: www.passengertransport.norfolk.gov.uk or 0844 800 8003. First Bus weekly ticket holders can now use the Orbital service and pay a reduced fee. However, the Green Party believes that the County Council should ensure full ticket integration so weekly tickets can be used on any service without further charge. I find the Orbital service quick and pleasant. I hope the relaunched service will be used more so the Orbital Bus can survive and hopefully be extended in the future.
