TENANTS SAY 'DEFEND COUNCIL HOUSING'

The City Council recently conducted a survey of council tenants and leaseholders in which they were asked for their views on the future of the city’s housing stock. 87% of those responding said that they believe the housing stock should remain under council control rather than being transferred to a housing association. The next stage of the process is at the next full City Council meeting when councillors will decide which of the options on the future of council housing to select.

Councillor Jessica Goldfinch, Green Party housing spokesperson, said: “The Green Party continues to support stock retention. It is now clear that the vast majority of tenants and leaseholders do too. Keeping the stock under council control is the only way to ensure that it remains available for future generations and that there is democratic control over rent levels and stock management.

“Over 50 councils have already opted for stock retention. We hope the Government will recognise this and agree to give all councils full funding for housing maintenance.”

A planning application has been submitted for 16 flats to be built on the site of the former Earl of Leicester pub on Dereham Road (by the junction with Bowthorpe Road). The application requires the pub building to be demolished. The Green Party is calling on developers to turn the existing building into flats because this would preserve an historic landmark and avoid the use of fresh building materials and disposal of old materials.

Permit parking update

The City Council has produced the final draft of its plans for extension to permit parking zones in Nelson. Residents on many of the streets not currently included in the zones were surveyed last year and there was a clear ‘no’ vote on most roads. The current plan is to extend the zone to the areas where there was a ‘yes’ vote: Lincoln Street, Alexandra Road and the parts of Sandringham Road and Stafford Street that are east of St Philips Road. The previous plans to include Cardiff Road in the zone extension have been abandoned following a petition signed by most residents. The extensions are due to be implemented in the autumn.

Keep traffic lights at Chapelfield roundabout

Norfolk County Council’s ruling Cabinet has decided to remove two of the sets of traffic lights at the roundabout by Chapelfield Gardens. The work to remove the lights at the top of Grapes Hill and on Chapel Field Road, and to create a third lane on the roundabout, is set to begin this month.

Andrew Boswell, County Councillor for Town Close ward, said: “The Green Party opposed these measures because we believe they will make the roundabout more dangerous and difficult for pedestrians and cyclists. If we are to promote sustainable transport, the needs of pedestrians and cyclists must be the priority on this key access route.

“We are also concerned about the decision not to allow a right turn into the new Chapelfield development from Chapel Field Road. This is likely to increase the number of motorists travelling towards the development along Unthank Road and Earlham Road. We will continue to lobby the County Council Cabinet to change its mind on this.”

Pub licensing update – Councillor Bob Gledhill writes…

Under new central government legislation every pub must re-apply for a licence by November. The new rules enable pubs to apply to open later than the traditional hours. The City Council has only just started to receive licence applications, so there will be a big rush in the coming months. Licence applications are publicised on pub windows, in local newspapers and by a Council letter to nearby properties. I will also aim to inform nearby residents about late licence applications when I suspect there will be concerns so people have the chance to comment before the City Council Licensing Committee makes a decision. This is important because weak legislation means applications must be automatically granted without discussion when no public comments are received.
