a stong Green voice

In the County Council election, the Green Party has a very strong chance of winning the Nelson ward seat after winning all three City Council seats here last year.

Green Councillors work hard and visit residents all year round, not just at election time.

Norwich South is one of the strongest prospects in the country for a Green MP. Green Euro-MP and Principle Speaker Caroline Lucas is visiting Norwich this week to support the local campaign.

Electing one more or less Labour or LibDem MP or County Councillor will not influence the political make-up at Westminster or County Hall - but electing the first Green MP and first Green County Councillors will make a real difference.

Norfolk County Council and General elections

What have Green City Councillors achieved?

At last year's local elections, the Green Party won five seats and the balance of power at City Hall. Green Councillors can point to the following achievements:

  • £90,000 of funding for improvements to the city's recycling scheme.

  • Money to increase Council staff support for provision for cyclists.

  • Scrapping of the council tax discount on long-term empty properties.

  • Norwich has obtained Fair Trade City Status following a process initiated by a Green Party motion to Council.

Green Councillors are also lobbying:

  • To protect council housing from privatisation.

  • For higher levels of affordable housing and renewable energy in new developments.

  • For protection of our green spaces.

  • For the felling of trees to be seen as a last resort.

"I have changed my support from Labour to the Greens because I am against the Government's policies on Iraq, student fees, the sale of school playing fields and the miserly increase in the state pension. I feel we need a strong Green voice at Westminster and Adrian Ramsay is a strong local candidate."

Derrick Betts, Bowthorpe Road resident

What would Green County Councillors stand for?

We need a strong Green voice at County Hall because only Green County Councillors would seek:

  • To secure funding for decent bus services across Norfolk and for essential pedestrian safety measures in numerous locations by abandoning plans for a Northern Distributor Road.

  • To ensure ethical investment of Council funds.

  • Sustainable development in the Eastern Region.

  • To protect school playing fields from development.

  • To ensure school meals are made from fresh, local organic food

"Adrian is a hard-working local councillor. As an MP, I believe he would be a strong representative for local people."

Josephine Bilton, Gladstone Street resident

What would Green MPs stand for?

We need a strong Green voice at Westminster because only Green MPs would seek to:

  • Take urgent action on climate change.

  • Implement the demands of the Make Poverty History campaign.

  • End privatisation in our public services.

  • Invest in organic farming and end GM crop trials.

  • Prevent further pre-emptive strikes, on Iran or Syria.
