STOP UNTHANK TESCO!

A campaign group, Residents Against Unthank Tesco, has been formed by local people opposed to the plans for a new Tesco store on the corner of Unthank Road and Trinity Street. Reasons for opposing the plans include:

  • The store would threaten the unique character of this part of the city and could drive independent shops in the Unthank Road area out of business.
  • The area would become more polluted and congested because of the extra cars and delivery lorries that the store would attract.

Tesco withdrew its initial application but its new plans will be considered by the City Council Planning Committee in the new year. There is still time to submit comments on or objections to the plans to:

Councillor Jessica Goldfinch said: "The Green Party is fully behind this campaign. We believe that a Tesco store would have a detrimental effect on the local environment and the local economy."

You can also help the campaign by signing the petition - available in several Unthank Road shops. For further information, or to offer help to the campaign, please phone (01603) 764070 or see www.stopunthanktesco.com

New Licensing Legislation

New licensing laws will be introduced in the new year. Two major changes are that there will be no common closing time and that the City Council (rather than magistrates) will decide whether or not to grant licenses.

Councillor Bob Gledhill said: "We are pushing for the Council to ensure maximum consultation with local residents when pubs apply for late licenses. Particularly in residential areas, it is crucial that the Council listens to the views of local residents as the prime consideration."

Renewable Energy and Affordable Housing Plans Blocked

Green Councillors recently proposed some amendments to the new Local Plan for Norwich. These included a requirement for companies to source 10% of energy in new developments from renewable sources and an obligation for developers to include a higher proportion of affordable housing in new developments than has previously been the case.

Councillor Adrian Ramsay said: "We were extremely disappointed when LibDem and Labour Councillors voted down our proposals. Some other Councils already have such policies. We will continue to campaign on these important issues"

Ally Gates Update

Residents living in roads between Belvoir Street and Winter Road should now be able to obtain a free alleygate from Norfolk Police - if everyone who uses the alleyway agrees. Contact PC Thrussell on telephone number (01603) 276248 for more information.

If you live elsewhere and were previously offered an allygate, there is still time to arrange this. The Police Crime Reduction Unit is pleased to have obtained funding to introduce this proven anti-crime measure over a wider area.

Permit Parking: How You Voted

Permit parking schemes are currently in place in about a third of Nelson Ward. In permit parking areas, residents must buy permits for them and their visitors to park. It is illegal for anyone else to park on the road during controlled hours.

During the summer, residents in most of the rest of Nelson were consulted on whether or not the scheme should be extended to their road. The only roads where a majority of respondents voted 'yes' were Lincoln Street, Cardiff Road and Alexandra Road. The City Council will now write to everyone initially consulted to tell them the results and give them an opportunity to comment before a final decision is made.
