Greens say 'vote no to NDR'

Norfolk County Council has launched another consultation on the Northern Distributor Road (NDR). Most Norwich residents have been sent a booklet and are asked to respond by 31 December 2004. If you haven's been sent a booklet and would like one, please cal 0844 800 8010 or e-mail norwich.transport@norfolk.gov.uk

The County Council is portraying the consultation as purely a choice between different routes. The Green Party is urging people to respond by saying they don't want the road to be built at all.

If you do this, please e-mail no2ndr@yahoo.co.uk to say so. The Green Party will use this information to try to ensure that all 'no votes' are counted.

Green Party member Andrew Boswell said: "We would urge residents to take the opportunity to say in this consultation that they don't want the NDR at all. This is especially the case given the recent news that the Government is unlikely to fund the proposal and that an NDR would therefore result in large council tax rises. A small proportion of the £140m NDR price tag could improve the local public transport system enormously."

Renewable energy and affordable housing plans blocked

Green Councillors recently proposed some amendments to the new Local Plan for Norwich. These included a requirement for companies to source at least 10% of energy in new developments from renewable sources (such as solar power) and an obligation for developers to include a higher proportion of affordable housing in new developments than has previously been the case

Councillor Adrian Ramsay, Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Norwich South, said: "We were extremely disappointed when LibDem and Labour Councillors voted down our proposals. Some other local Councils already have such policies and we in Norwich should also use the planning process to promote vital goals such as these. We will continue to campaign on these important issues."

Hewett school plans 'called in' for Public Inquiry

The Government Office for the East of England (GO-EAST) has ruled that there will be a Public Inquiry into the plans to build a private leisure centre, retirement home and nursery on part of the Hewett School playing fields. The plans for the site were passed by a majority of City Council Planning Committee members (and opposed by the Greens) - but GO-EAST has responded to the request by Green Councillors and local campaign group Residents Against Inappropriate Development (RAID) that a Public Inquiry should take place.

The Inquiry will take place some time in 2005, and residents will have the opportunity to submit written or oral comments. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister will then make the final decision on the application.

Councillor Adrian Ramsay said: "The Green Party will continue to support the RAID campaign at the Public Inquiry. We are concerned about the traffic implications of the proposals and believe that such green space should be freely available for use by schools and the wider community to benefit public health. A leisure centre with high membership fees would not provide such a benefit."

Greens push pro-hunting lobby to recognise ban

Green Party Councillor Rupert Read has forced the Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance, Simon Hart, to publicly state that his organisation will not encourage law-breaking. Responding to Councillor Read's question during a recent edition of BBC television's Question Time, Mr Hart said: "I would never dream of telling people they should break the law."

Councillor Read commented: "This is a crucial concession from the Countryside Alliance. I am delighted that this barbaric and pointless activity has at last been banned.

"It is vital that this ban is upheld. The Government should have forced the ban through earlier rather than wasting time seeking a non-existent compromise.

"It is now time to address other areas of animal exploitation - such as factory farming - and issues of real concern to rural communities - such as the closure of Post Offices and the decline in other local services."
