Mixed News On Incinerator
Norfolk County Council has informed waste company WRG that its plan for building an incinerator at Costessey is no longer the Council's preferred waste disposal option. However, the Green Councillors have warned that the ruling Conservative Group at County Hall is still considering building an incinerator.
Green Party County Councillor Andrew Boswell said: "This decision is due to problems with the site in question and sadly not because the ruling group has decided that burning waste is a bad idea. A full-blown incinerator is still being considered. The second option currently on the table is a form of Mechanical Biological Treatment involving burning as part of the process. Pellets are produced that would be burnt either on site in Costessey or transported elsewhere. The County Council should rule out any option involving burning."
Steven Altman, Green Party City Councillor for Mancroft ward, added: "Green Councillors are pressing for improved recycling facilities and a Resource Recovery Park as environmentally-friendly ways of tackling the landfill problem. Resource Recovery Parks have proved effective in California and Sweden at separating residual waste to achieve very high levels of re-use and recycling. They also create many new local jobs."

News In Brief
Councillor Steven Altman writes:
A planning application for 11 houses and 17 flats to be built on the site north of Armes Street, between Nelson and Northumberland Streets, is set to be withdrawn. City Council planning officers are unhappy with the density of the proposed development, while Green Councillors and local residents have pointed out that the site is a haven for wildlife and the proposals would result in neighbouring houses being overlooked.
City Council officers have promised that the fence on the Mile Cross Road bridge will soon be repaired. The Green Councillors and some nearby Mancroft residents have been trying to get the Council to mend the fence for several months as it is directly above the river. We hope this promise for it to be made safe will be kept.

Anglia Square Consultation
Councillor Howard Jago writes:
Norwich City Council has recently been consulting on its Northern City Centre Area Action Plan, which sets out options for the future of Anglia Square and the surrounding area. The Green Party Councillors responded to the consultation. The points they made include:
- Efforts should be made to help promote independent businesses in the Magdalen Street area, for example by copying the successful Norwich Lanes initiative.
- Anglia Square should be highlighted to businesses as a good place for office space, to help regenerate the area.
- The green spaces should be protected and maintained.
- We support the suggestion of a new bus interchange.
Our next newsletter will include the consultation results.
