28 March 2008 - Green Party Councillors are urging all businesses and households to participate in the Global Earth Hour event tomorrow evening.
The event, which is backed locally by Norwich City Council and Norwich Carbon Reduction Trust, will take place on Saturday 29 March from 8pm when everyone will join together and switch off all non-essential lighting and other unnecessary electrical appliances for one hour.
The aim of the Earth Hour event is to demonstrate how much energy (and therefore carbon emissions) can be saved through a concerted effort not to waste energy. Adrian Ramsay, Co-ordinator of the Green Party City Councillors, said: "I encourage residents to take part in Earth Hour. Experience from Sydney's Earth Hour last year suggests it will show how that a significant proportion of energy can be saved when a concerted effort is made. However, it's important that residents and the council alike take forward the Earth Hour message into everyday life to cut out unnecessary energy use on a permanent basis to help tackle climate change."
