27 March 2008 - Residents of Silkfields sheltered housing accommodation (off Oak Street in Norwich city centre) were pleased today as plans for a new housing development, next to Silkfields, were unanimously rejected by the City Council Planning Committee this morning.
The plans to build six new flats were refused due to the flood risk and drainage problems associated with the area. Residents and local Green Councillor Tom Dylan also highlighted that the plans would involve the loss of a valued green space, freqently used by the residents of Silkfields and a natural habitat for wildlife including otters and birds. Residents were also concerned about being overlooked by the new development and the loss of light it would create.
Green Party Councillor for Mancroft Ward, Tom Dylan, has been campaigning with local residents on the issue. He said: "I am really pleased that the residents' views were taken into account by the committee. This green space next to the river is very valuable and not suitable for development."
