Green Party London Assembly Member In Norwich To Boost Green Prospects, In Last Days Of Election Campaign

25th April - Jenny Jones -- Green Party London Assembly member, former Deputy Mayor of London and currently the London Mayor's Road Safety advisor -- will be visiting Norwich as part of a tour of East Anglia early next week, to deliver a boost to the Norwich Greens' election campaign at this crucial point.

Jenny Jones will be meeting commuters on Castle Meadow in the heart of Norwich (near the entrance to Castle Mall) from 8.15 a.m. onwards, on Monday 30 April, to congratulate them on playing their part in fighting dangerous climate change, by cycling or taking the bus, and to talk with them about the relatively poor state of public transport in Norwich compared to London, and what can be done about it.

Jenny Jones A.M. said "The buses need to be regulated – so that the Council can determine where they go, how often, and how much they cost -- and streets used by pedestrians need to be made safe for pedestrians, who deserve priority. Real progress has been made on these things in London, I am proud to say, thanks in part to the Green Party having a huge influence on the Mayor's budget for the city. Meanwhile, Norwich is a beacon of Green Party success, and I am delighted to be here today to back the bid by Norwich Green Party to break through into double-figures on the Council this week. I am confident that Norwich will achieve this, and then the Green Party group on the Council will have become the first-ever group anywhere of Green Councillors to do so, and so to be able to put our policies on pedestrians and buses -- and much much more -- into operation."

Greens launch 'Norwich Vision 2020' document.

Norwich Green Party is using the occasion of Jenny Jones's visit to launch its 'Vision 2020' document, which outlines how Norwich would look in 2020, with a Green administration, plus a Green MP and MEP, etc. This unique document, which goes well beyond the confines of a normal Party manifesto, can be accessed as from now by clicking here.

Councillor Rupert Read of Wensum ward, Green Party Transport spokesperson, said, "Our Vision 2020 document sets out the full range of our vision for the future of Norwich. One key part of that vision is: a safer, calmer city whose transport system functions better and more sustainably than at present."

Councillor Read continued, "We in the Green Party believe strongly in pedestrian safety and in resisting dangerous climate change by making it easier for pedestrians, cyclists and public-transport-users to get around. In my ward, Wensum, this translates into things like our on-going campaign to improve the buses in the Dereham Road area, and our pushing for traffic-calming urgently on roads such as Bowthorpe Road, Jex Road and Hellesdon Road. It is great to have Jenny Jones with us today, to learn from her and from London how exactly Norwich can leap forward into becoming a really safe and calm city ... Jenny has shown consistent strength and purpose in her work to improve public transport, walking and cycling in London and has always shown a keen interest in what Greens are doing in other areas to develop a more sustainable transport system."
