Greens React To Government's 'Respect Agenda' Funding Announcement19th January - The government has announced today that Norwich is to be one of 40 locations around the UK to receive funding to implement its 'respect' agenda, aimed at curbing anti-social behaviour. The Green vision for radically improving community safety in Norwich (read it here) centres upon preventing crime and anti-social behaviour. Said Councillor Rupert Read, Green member for Wensum ward, "This government has forgotten completely about tackling the causes of crime and of anti-social behaviour. Tackling the causes of anti-social behaviour means tackling a lack of hope for a decent future; it means Councils and government leading through being beacons of honesty and good practice; and it means things like good secure design for plenty of new affordable housing. Greens will work hard to ensure that the 'respect' agenda is not just a sticking-plaster 'solution'." Added Councillor Adrian Ramsay, Co-ordinator of the Green group on Norwich City Council, "This 'respect agenda' project coming to Norwich will bring new money to the Council, and new money from the government is always welcome. We will try to ensure that the Labour administration puts this money to good effect in improving living conditions and quality of life across our city. In addition to community-based policing, Greens would ensure that there is plenty of investment in recreational facilities for young people, which is a highly-effective way of preventing a drift into less savoury activities.". |
