Incinerator Latest

7 March 2006 - In a meeting which was preceeded by an 100-strong protest by campaign group NAIL2 (Norfolk Against Incineration and Landfill), including many Green Party members and many Costessey residents, the Council discussed a report from the Council's Waste Management Select Committee. This report recommended that more time was required to listen to discussion. Greens however, pointed out that the issue was far more clear cut.

Green Party Councillor Adrian Ramsay said, "The Council already has a view on this issue, which it took when voting to adopt a zero waste strategy. The unacceptability of any thermal waste treatment is a key pillar of zero waste strategy. It is difficult to understand the Lib Dems - who previously voted for this zero strategy unanimously - and Labour are so keen to make a U-turn on the road to a sustainable system of waste management".

Councillor Bob Gledhill, Norwich Green Party Environment Spokesperson, added "The incinerator would provide a disincentive for local authorities to introduce badly needed recycling improvements, and at the same time it would have potential to damage the health of many residents in and around Costessey. Yet judging by many speeches from the other parties there was an enthusiasm for incineration. We hope that the Lib Dem, Tory and Labour Councillors who are most keen to see an incinerator built will take this opportunity to listen to the views of local residents, and of the many experts who have expressed concern".
