Climate Change Action call at Norwich City Hall 22 March 2005 - Environmental campaigner, and Green Party candidate for Norfolk County Council, Nelson Ward, Dr Andrew Boswell will ask a public question to Councillor Jane Rooza, Executive Member for Environment, on Norwich City Council’s delivery on its recent CRed partnership. The question will be at the Council’s meeting on 22 March.

The question is asked in the context of the March 1st, Friends of the Earth (FoE) call for the UK Government to set an annual target and budgets for controlling carbon emissions. FoE made clear that “local authorities have a duty to share the UK’s responsibility for meeting legal Kyoto commitments and national Government manifesto commitments to reduce CO2 by 20 per cent by 2010 from 1990 levels.” Dr Boswell comments: “Norwich City Council has shown good intent to work on Climate Change, and meet challenges such as the FoE one. It was excellent when City Councillors voted unanimously for the Council to become a partner in the UEA based Carbon Reduction Project. I’m now asking what has been achieved since then. “The UK 2010 targets are tough. The CRed target, 60% reduction by 2025, is much tougher. The Norwich City Council needs to develop a Climate Change Action Plan, or similar, with adequate funding, to make sure that Norwich meets its responsibility as a CRed partner. The same goes for the Norfolk County Council who also signed up to CRed.” Links Press release from Friends of the Earth, 1 March 2005: |
