Save our local Post Offices!

Under the Government's programme of local Post Office closures, three branches in the Norwich City Council area are proposed for closure: Rosary Road, Vauxhall Street and Bowthorpe Road. The Green Party is supporting the local campaigns to keep these branches open.

Consultation

The consultation period has now closed. The Green Party formally objected to the proposed closures of the Rosary Road, Vauxhall Street, Bowthorpe Road and Trowse Post Office branches. The national Post Office is considering the consultation responses and is expected to announce its decision on 26th June.

Post Office closures: the facts

The Green Councillors have been highlighting some of the reasons behind the proposed Post Office closures in Norwich:

• The Government plans to close 2500 branches nationally.
• Labour, LibDem and Conservative Euro-MPs have voted for an EU Directive that will prevent Governments subsidising Post Office branches that are not making a profit, even if they are important local facilities. The Labour, LibDem and Conservative Parties are therefore effectively supporting Post Office closures. Green Euro-MPs opposed this Post Offices Directive. The Green Party believes that Post Offices are crucial to local communities and that branches should be empowered to offer a wider range of services.
