Save our Post Offices!

Under the Government's programme of local Post Office closures, three branches in the Norwich City Council area are proposed for closure: Rosary Road, Vauxhall Street and Bowthorpe Road. The Green Party is supporting the local campaigns to keep these branches open.

Twenty's plenty

The Green Party is campaigning for a 20mph speed limit in all residential streets in Norwich.

Yes to wind energy

The Norwich Green Party supports the development of true renewable energy (not nuclear, not 'clean coal', not agro-biofuels) as these industries are crucial to our region's economic health, and also in the fight against dangerous climate change. Green councillors work to build the support needed for a flourishing marine and wind energy sector to develop across East Anglia.

Re-organisation of Norfolk Special Educational Needs

Norfolk County Council has been reviewing its Special Education Needs strategy since 2006. Norwich Green Party supported the aims of bringing an equity of provision of Special Needs education to each of the five areas of the County, however, there are a number of issues with the current approach that have concerned the Green Councillors and parents and residents. We argue places must be increased not lost in Norwich, and any savings must be ploughed back into the service. Crucially, cchool cultures and specialisms, built up over many years by dedicated head teachers and staff, must not be lost.

Stop Incineration In Norfolk

In December 2005 the Conservative administration on Norfolk County Council announced that it was intending to build an incinerator at Longwater in Costessey. The Green Party, local residents and the NAIL2 campaign group (www.nail2.org) have been campaigning against any plans for the burning of waste in Norfolk. They are concerned about the effects of incineration on health and the environment and also that incinerators create a demand for waste by locking councils into long contracts. They are instead arguing for comprehensive recycling facilities and a resource recovery park to deal with the waste problem in an environmentally-friendly and economically successful way.

STOP UNTHANK TESCO!

The Green Party is campaigning against the application by Tesco to build a store on the corner of Unthank Road and Trinity Street. Green Councillor Chris Hull is a member of the Residents Against Unthank Tesco (RAUT) committee which is organising the efforts to stop the proposals. Four Tesco applications have been rejected by the City Council Planning Committee but an appeal hearing is likely to take place in late 2008.

No to the Northern Distributor Road

The Green Party strongly opposes the building of the Northern Distributor Road (NDR) on the ground that more road building will only generate more traffic. The Greens would rather invest part of the (ever increasing) price tag to create a transport system of which Norwich can be truely proud.

Think Green! (Stop Junk Mail) campaign

The Green Party is supporting a campaign to reduce the amount of junk mail that comes through people's letter boxes.

Save Hewett School playing fields

In September 2004 a majority of City Councillors on the Planning Committee gave the go-ahead for the building of a private leisure centre, nursing home and nursery on the Hewett school playing fields. However, following a campaign by local residents and the Green Party the developers withdrew the application. The Greens are lobbying the County Council to rule out private development on any school playing fields in Norfolk.
